What is detention and demurrage in road freight?

Detention — often called demurrage in road transport — compensates the carrier when loading or unloading exceeds the agreed free hours. It is one of the most disputed charges in forwarding because the evidence lives in timestamps, CMR remarks, and driver messages.

In freight operations

Clear quotes state free time and the hourly rate after it; disputes shrink when the terms were in the offer.

Timestamped driver communication and documents make detention claims defensible.
